Vedic astrology software: what to look for before you buy

A working checklist for charts, Ayanamsha, dasha, Panchang, Vargas and reports — then an honest map of how Kundli 8 fits. No ranking slogans.

People search “Vedic astrology software” when they want a tool they can return to: save a birth chart, read timing, print a report, maybe match two charts. The market mixes free calculators, Windows research suites and browser products. This page is a buying filter written from Kundli 8’s documented product — not a league-table or “most accurate engine” pitch.

Astronomy (planet longitudes, a named Ayanamsha) and astrology (houses, dasha stories, remedies) are different jobs. Software that is careful about the first still needs labels on the second.

Who this is for

  • Someone who wants a Janam Kundli in the browser, not a one-off screenshot from a calculator.
  • A working astrologer who needs a repeatable report with the same engine on every reopen.
  • An NRI or traveller who needs place search and historical timezone, not only an India city list.
  • A learner who wants a manual beside the chart, not forum folklore.

If you only need a single Guna Milan number for a WhatsApp message, a dedicated matching site may be enough. If you need the natal chart, dasha, Panchang and PDF around the same person, you are shopping for software.

What Vedic astrology software should include

Use this as a pass/fail list. Marketing adjectives do not replace it.

CapabilityWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Birth dataWrong time or DST quietly moves Lagna and dasha balance.Date, time, place, stored coordinates, named timezone.
Natal chartDegrees and house/sign mapping are the rest of the system.Sidereal longitudes, Lagna, Moon, nodes; North/South (and other) drawings if you use them.
AyanamshaLahiri vs Raman vs KP is not a theme setting; it shifts every longitude.Named school on the chart, not a silent offset.
DashaVimshottari is the common professional clock; other systems are extras.Moon-nakshatra balance, Mahadasha/Antardasha dates you can audit.
PanchangBirth Tithi/Nakshatra/Yoga/Karana/Vaar are traditional context, not a weather widget.Computed at birth instant, not “today’s panchang” pasted on the kundli.
VargasD9 is widely used; D2–D60 are a different evidence problem.Which charts are scoring-grade vs display-only.
ReportsClients ask for a file, not a login they lose.Same data as on-screen; export/print rules stated.
Honesty rule: a feature that cannot name its method should not drive a score, a “yes/no dosha”, or a paid PDF conclusion.

Charts

A useful natal chart shows planets in signs with degrees, the Ascendant, and a drawing you already know how to read. North Indian diamonds, South Indian sign boxes, East Indian layouts, Oriya-fixed and circular wheels are display languages for the same longitudes — they are not different astronomies.

Kundli 8 draws customer-ready D1 Rashi and D9 Navamsha in the supported styles, plus additional varga drawings where the product allows display. Style choice is preference; Lagna identification is not. If software hides degrees behind a pretty wheel, treat it as a poster, not a workstation.

Ayanamsha

Sidereal Vedic work subtracts an Ayanamsha from tropical longitudes. Two products that disagree on the school will disagree on house cusps at the edges and on dasha balance when the Moon sits near a nakshatra boundary.

Kundli 8 defaults new customer charts to N.C. Lahiri. Other historical calculation modes remain in the engine; the customer selector stays conservative until those formulas are reconciled with independent references. That is slower than offering twenty unnamed dropdowns. It is also how you avoid silent method drift.

The product handbook chapter on nine ayanamsha profiles is the operational reference: Nine ayanamsha profiles.

Dasha

Vimshottari is a 120-year Moon-nakshatra clock with nested sub-periods. Software should show the balance at birth and the date chain, not only a slogan such as “Saturn is running”.

Kundli 8 presents Vimshottari Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantarda with plain-language context. Interpretive phal (what a period “means for career”) is labelled separately from the clock. Other dasha systems exist in the classical literature; if a vendor cannot show the sequence on your chart, do not pay for the story.

Panchang

Birth Panchang is five traditional limbs at the natal instant: Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Vaar. Festival calendars and “today’s muhurta” are useful products, but they are not a substitute for the natal five-limb row.

Kundli 8 computes those birth-time details in the kundli workspace. Day-timing rows such as Hora, Abhijit and Rahu Kaal are available where implemented; deeper muhurta research is not claimed as a complete classical muhurta engine on this page.

Vargas

Divisional charts (Vargas) refine topics: D9 for relationship/dharma themes in many North Indian practices, other divisions for other questions. The trap is treating every D-chart as equally certified because the UI can draw sixteen boxes.

In Kundli 8, D1 and D9 are the verified pair used with commercial regression. Other Shodashavarga drawings can appear as display charts. They do not quietly feed scores or predictions. If you need a research desktop that treats all sixteen as scoring-grade, compare that claim against published methods — including ours.

Reports

A software report should be the workspace in printable order: birth facts, charts, dasha, labelled interpretation. “200 pages” is not a quality metric. Unsupported modules stuffed into a PDF become a liability when a client asks “which Ayanamsha?”.

Kundli 8’s Complete Report is a large, catalogued section set (61 registered sections / 75 mapped features in the current inventory). Viewing the workspace is open on eligible explore/trial rules; PDF and print export stay gated on Full Access. Sample output lives on samples. Matching, numerology and some research surfaces stay inside the product (often noindex) rather than as thin public calculators.

Web vs desktop

Browser / PWA (Kundli 8)Typical desktop suite
InstallAccount in the browser; PWA optional.Windows/Mac installer, licence file, atlas CD/download.
Same chart everywhereYes, if you keep the login.Usually one PC unless you copy files.
Research depthScoped to labelled, tested modules.Often huge option lists; freshness and support vary.
Price shapeSubscription or lifetime web access (see Pricing).Often a large one-time SKU plus paid upgrades.

Choose desktop when you need offline ephemerides, custom research databases, or a program you already trained on for twenty years. Choose a browser product when the chart must travel with the astrologer and the vendor publishes what is verified vs display-only.

How Kundli 8 fits

Kundli 8 is the web product of PremiumAV Private Limited (Nehru Place, New Delhi). The calculation core is branded Kundli 8 Engine — since 1999 (the same lineage as the earlier Kundli desktop line). The public site is astro.maya123.com.

  • Create and save a kundli, then work in one Complete Report GUI rather than a maze of disconnected tools.
  • 18 interface languages; report/PDF language coverage still varies — UI language is not a promise that every paragraph is translated.
  • Worldwide place search with stored coordinates and IANA timezone; historical UTC offset is derived for the birth stamp.
  • Current Full Access: ₹999 / ₹2,499 / ₹9,999 (India) and $10 / $24 / $99 (international), as on Pricing. Limited 15-day explore; PDF remains export-gated.
  • Provisional or display-only methods (Vargas beyond D1/D9, provisional Shadbala) stay labelled. Lal Kitab customer output stays behind its own gate until the commercial minimum is met.

What this page does not do: copy competitor feature grids, invent user counts, or imply Microsoft Store availability while a package is still in certification.

Questions

What should Vedic astrology software include?

At minimum: birth-data capture with place and timezone, a natal chart with planetary degrees, Ayanamsha choice you can name, Vimshottari timing, Panchang at birth, and a report you can read or export. Extra modules only help if their method is labelled.

Is web-based Vedic software less serious than desktop?

Not automatically. Desktop tools can be deeper for research files and offline ephemerides. A browser product is stronger when the same chart, report and account follow you across devices, and when calculation boundaries are published.

Which Ayanamsha should I use?

Kundli 8 starts new charts on N.C. Lahiri. Other historical modes exist in the product; customer selectors stay conservative until a mode is reconciled with independent references. Name the school on the chart, do not mix unnamed offsets.

Does Kundli 8 include every Varga and full Shadbala?

D1 Rashi and D9 Navamsha are the verified scoring pair. Other Shodashavarga charts can display. Shadbala is a provisional six-fold table, not a certified classical complete Shadbala used for scores.

How much does Kundli 8 cost?

Current Full Access prices are ₹999 / ₹2,499 / ₹9,999 in India and $10 / $24 / $99 internationally, matching the Pricing page. A limited 15-day explore period is available; PDF export stays gated.

Can I trust a “complete” kundli PDF from any site?

Ask which sections are computed vs interpretive, which Ayanamsha was used, and whether matching or dasha claims are labelled. Kundli 8’s Complete Report is a large section set; incomplete methods stay labelled rather than filled with invented certainty.
